Dubai Creek Tower among the world’s tallest buildings under construction

Since 1931, the Empire State Building has been named as the world’s tallest tower, with a 1.454-ft. In 2010, Burj Khalifa was inaugurated in Dubai to become the world’s tallest tower with a height of 2716.5 ft. However, some towers are still under construction, hence Burj Khalifa might have some competition.

Currently, there are 100 buildings under construction all over the world that are expected to compete to take the record-breaking title. Here are 8 of the best tallest towers still under construction, according to The Skyscraper Center:

  1. Jeddah Tower

City: Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Use: Residential / serviced apartments

Once completed, the Jeddah Tower in Saudi Arabia will become the tallest tower in the world with a height of 3281 feet, overcoming Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The $1.4 billion commercial and residential project will consist of 167 floors. this mixed-use tower will feature a hotel, offices and retail outlets.

The infrastructure works of the project were started in April 2013, and the construction of the tower started in September 2014. However, in late 2017, construction was halted as two of the project’s most prominent supporters were arrested, the prince and businessman Al Waleed bin Talal and the head of the tower’s developer, Bakr bin Laden, as a part of the anti-corruption campaign in the kingdom. So far, no date has been announced for the resumption of construction work.

2. Dubai Creek Tower

City: Dubai, UAE

Use: Observation

Dubai Creek Tower, a new architectural masterpiece in Dubai, will become the tallest tower in the city. The tower is a joint venture between Emaar Properties and Dubai Holding. The tower was designed by the Swiss-Spanish architect Calatrava.

The final height of, the $1 billion cost tower, will not be announced until it is completed, however, it is projected that the height of the tower will be approximately 1,300M tall.

Dubai Creek Tower boasts lush gardens, as well as the world’s highest observation platform, which offers gazebos, 360-degree views of the city. The 20 usable floors of the tower will feature hotels, restaurants and several residences.

Construction began in October 2016, and 2021 was set for completion.

3. Tower M

City: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Use: Office

Located in downtown Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the M tower, which is being built as a part of the downtown development project. The tower will not become the tallest tower in Malaysia, but the 145-storey tower has a gravity-defying structure. The tower is 2,279 feet tall and is developed by KLCC Property Holdings Berhad.

4. Merdeka PNB118

City: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Use: Serviced apartments / hotel / office

PNB 118 tower is Malaysia’s new skyscraper, also known as KL 118, which is currently being built in Kuala Lumpur. The building will have a height of 2,133 ft and will have 118 floors, 83 of them for offices and the rest will be for Park Hyatt Hotel and retail stores.

Construction of the building began in 2014 and is supposed to be completed in 2022, to be the second tallest tower in the world.

5. Evergrande International Financial Center T1

City: Hefei, China

Use: Hotel / residential / office

The tower is 1699 ft, and once completed, it will become one of the tallest buildings in the world. The bamboo-inspired tower is expected to become the tallest building in east China’s Anhui Province.

6. Greenland Centre

City: Xi’an, China

Use: Hotel/ office

China’s Greenland Centre, currently under construction, and it will serve as a hotel and office space. The 1634 ft building was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, and the developer of the building is the Greenland Group.

7. Chengdu Greenland Tower

City: Chengdu, China

Use: Hotel/ office

The Greenland Tower was also developed by the Greenland Group, a building that will serve primarily for hospitality and commercial purposes. The tower is 1535 ft, making it the fourth tallest in China and the tallest in southwest China. It’s worth mentioning that the building was designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture.

8. Corporate Avenue 1

City: Chongqing, China

Use: Hotel/ office

Corporate Avenue 1 is one of the upcoming mega projects in China. It will be the tallest building in Chongqing with a length of 1503 ft, and 2022 was set to launch the project. The project owner is China Vanke Co. Ltd Real Estate, and the project designer is Chongqing Architecture and Design Institute.
